  • how do you use the material from a wormery

I have been running a wormery since last August, I now have a fair level of material to use, but there is also a number of slugs in it. Has any one got advice on how to use the material and how do you remove the slugs from it.

I don't really get slugs very much in my wormery apart from usually a few on the inside of the lid. Maybe it depends on what type you have, I'm not sure. I have a three tiered one where you fill the top level and when that's full, you empty the bottom one and move it to the top. I tend to use it mainly as a mulch when I'm planting and also to revive the soil of potted plants and shrubs. I have also mixed it with normal compost for planting on but as I don't grow much seasonal stuff in pots any more I find that it's good giving a bit of omph to the soil. I always put the tray I'm about to empty on the top of the wormery in the light to drive the worms down to the layer below so that I don't loose too many of the workers.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Pick them up with one of these

I'd prefer to pick them up with my fingers as I can wash my hands easily but hate that rubber smell that seems to last all day after you've worn Marigolds

I find I can't wash the slime (ack) off my hands even after several goes (using salt as a rub would work, I guess)

I must admit that I would go with Alison as when I use rubber gloves I usually finish up bursting them trying to get my hands into them and I have used talc. etc. (plus they cost money)

I use BBQ tongs or a similar shaped piece of flexible metal to pick up slugs - I don't BBQ them

I always used to pick up slugs with whatever was closest to me e.g. dead leaf, until one day the closest thing was an old wooden peg that had fallen off the line. Does the job lovely, easy to grab them and splosh into the salty depths
