Ginger Beer Plant

I remember my mother having one of these and making delicious ginger beer.
As I was 6, can't really remember the details.
Can anyone out there please tell me how you start one and the feeding of it.

That is pretty much the recipe I always used (although larger quantities), but it is risky adding the liquid from the 'plant' to HOT syrup, because you want it to ferment a bit more....... I always added some cool water before the active bit....
