    cleanliness is close to essential

Ohbeery !! how could you be so wrong.
You can clean brewing equipment with cheap bleach as long as you rinse it off which is obvious. I have been using cheap bleach for about ten years since I realised what a good idea it was. It really steralises all surfaces which is essential for continual healthy brewing.
I can only think that you have used bleach then not rinsed it, it is excellent but of course you need to rinse it.

gonna have to agree with brewer im afraid!
The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

I thought the Geranium smell occured when you used the sorbate without a campden tablet?

Quite right tiachica, I may have run two thoughts together, I am still adamant that however effective bleach may be it is just not worth the risk of contamination, the majority of household bleaches contain sodium hypochlorite, the fact remains as we all seem to agree that rinsing is vital.

Without wishing to denigrate the accumulated knowledge of the "Grapes" this is in the main a "Growing Fruit and Veg" site, WAH is a dedicated brewing/fermenting site with many ancient and wise members who boast amongst their number, chemists, long term winemakers and the odd chef(moi), all experts in their field.

(and if "brewer" calls me "ohbeery" I will go round to his/her allotment and leave a rude note)(and leave the greenhouse door open on a cold night)

I am among those who never uses anything other than strict basic hygeine. No bleach, no metaisulphite, no campden tablets, just a really thorough wash of all equipment (and I am VERY fussy about that), and use of as near boiling water as possible on the ingredients list.

I'm with Hilary on this one. Good basic hygiene, wash everything with hot water and a little liquid detergent. The only bleach or steriliser I would consider using would be Milton or own brand equivalent (sold for sterilising babies bottles).
