  • Turning wine into vinegar

I have so much wine on the go atm I was getting a bit bored with the bubble bubble toil and trouble. As it is halloween I am filling my cauldron with yucky wine and hoping to put a wry smile on faces. Yep - I am going to turn my disgusting wine into vinegar. I do so hate waste.

Any tried and trusted recipes gratefully received.

You need to buy some wine or cider vinegar with 'mother' still in it, this is what turns the wine into vinegar. Not quite sure how to describe it, it's a bit like starting a ginger beer plant and you just keep feeding it? Well, the 'mother' is the bit that keeps on living and converting the wine to vinegar.

You should be able to get it from health food shops, or, maybe find some online?

I have no way of getting some vinegar mother so am trying to make my own. Apparently unpasteurised cider vinegar can help to produce one. So here goes.
      1. A jar full of pineapple rind and flesh -a cup of cider vinegar - some sugar syrup loosely covered and kept warm and dark.

      2. Left over wine dregs, cider vinegar loosley covered and kept in a warm and dark place.

That's as far as i've got. Fingers crossed I will make the mother of all vinegars: eek:

Sounds interesting and I will watch for the results.

On another tack, a few years ago for a Halloween party I coloured my homebrew various shades with food colouring. It was quite funny giving guests a glass of blue or green wine

That sounds fun shirl. The problem I have is nobody dares to drink my wine even if it's the right colour

Just bumping this one to find out if anyone out there has made their own cider vinegar?
I resent spending over a quid on a small 350 ml bottle and all my recipes call for 500ml!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Jeannie, have a look at your local equestrian supplier - they sell apple cider vinegar as a feed supplement. I don't suppose it is much different to the supermarket stuff.

Best way I can think of to make cider vinegar without having a "mother of vinegar", buy 4lts apple juice as cheap as possible, add 1lb sugar, 1tsp yeast nutrient, 1tsp youngs super yeast, get it fermenting and after 1 week leave uncovered in your shed/outhouse, the fruit flys will find it, fall in and the bacteria they carry will turn it into vinegar for you.
Haven't been around this site very often recently but what did Bren do to get banned?
Eat well, live well, drink moderately and be happy (hic!)

I surmise you have to sieve the flies out OB . To answer your question about Bren Girl...it's more like what she didn't do. I think the photos in the jacuzzi were one of the last straws...don't ask...I still have nightmares

Proper yummy scrummy. Really good taste to it, only real problem I had was having enough left over wine to put in the vinegrier

Lol! How did I know you'd say that?! Sounds good though - can you use it for pickles & chutneys?
