  • Sterilising Bottles

I've got some elderflower cordial to bottle up (to sell at a craft fair). I've some little swing top bottles. Can they be sterilised in the dishwasher?

I have done it before, but cordial doesn't seem to keep too long (as I'm sure you know!)

I took the rubber bit off the flip top, and poured boiling water on that, then re-seated it whilst it was still warm, and the bottle hot from the dishwasher (just was easier to do when more flexible).

Probably should add it was for my own use though, I wasn't selling it.

Not sure how hot a dishwasher gets, so not sure if that would actually sterilize the bottles. You could use Milton (used for sterilising babies bottles, and available from most supermarkets and chemists).

Just have done a bit of research. Somewhere I read 68C for <can't remember how many> minutes will kill all known bacteria.

Wikipedia says dishwasher aren't hot enough (mine runs at 75C on intensive).. various books I have at home say they're fine.

I tend to use an oven @ 100C for jam jars - usually in there for 10 mins odd I've never had any spoil... but for short term stuff the dishwasher has worked for me too.

I might take the rubber seals off then, and stick them in the oven, like I do for jars....

You could always give lakeland a bell too - they have a very helpful advice team - I've phoned them numerous times about what I can and can't do to their bottles

Aha, they are not Lakeland bottles.... they are from a cheaper retailer as I buy about 50+ jars at a time, so I tagged some nice little bottles onto the order this time for the cordial!

I use the dishwasher and then pop in the oven for 10mins or so. Personally I think the dishwasher would be ok if use at home but if your going to sell them I wouldn't mess about. Take the seals off and put in the oven to be safe.

Well, mine aren't lakeland ones either I just phone them and ask them (I did have a few of theirs from a previous trip there mind).
