Following the death of my father last year, and while clearing out years of accumulated tat, I came across a very mucky wine bottle in the cellar. I wiped it down and saw a hand written label that said, Carrot, 1978. Now my mum died in 1980 and was a keen home wine maker. I presume that it was from the last batch she made as her health was bad after that date.
Anyway, always curious, i took it back home with me, popped it into a cupboard next to the cooker and promptly forgot about it.
Today i came across it again so decided to check it it.
In the bottle bottom was a thick sludge, but the wine above looked clear, so i eased the dry cork out expecting the vine to have turned.... But............... WOW! Its very sweet, strong and drinkable. I have decanted it into another bottle. It like a fine sweet pale golden sherry, or maybe a maderia.
Its a good many years since i made my own wines and never managed to make anything as good as this, let alone one that would keep for 34 years.
Cheers Mum.
