  • Beginner's fermenting bin question

I'm totally new to this brewing lark. I bought a book on it and got interested, then found a lot of brewing gear at a car boot sale for the princely sum of £1, but I'm not sure if the fermenting bin that was part of that is actually OK for what I want to do- I'm trying to make blackberry wine (tips appreciated!)- but the recipe is for 1 gallon, and it's a 5 gallon bin- is that going to be an issue, as there'll be too much air in? Do I need to find something smaller? I do have a 1 gallon demi-john to move it in to.

Also, the bin has a small hole drilled in the lid, and I'm not sure why- it doesn't seem to fit any sort of airlock I've come across, (including the tube with a 1-way valve on that came with the gear, which doesn't appear to fit in or on anything), as it's only about 5mm. Any ideas what it's for? Is it just supposed to be left open? It doesn't mention anything about fermenting bins having holes in the lid in the books I have, and it looks like it might have been added later.

Fast answers much appreciated, as I've already picked a mass of blackberries, and I'd like to get it all going today if I can figure out how to do so...

    Thanks for any help!

You can carry out the aerobic fermentation in a big bin when making a small amount of wine. What I do is flap a towel (The one covering the bin) like a boxer's second to dispell the gasses and introduce oxygen each day.

The hole could be for a 'bubbler' using an adaptor of some sort, or it could be used to insert a thermometer to test the temp of the 'stuff'.

Dont forget to use a metobiosulphate solution in your 'bubbler' when you come to the anearobic fermentation stage.

    Cheers, Tony.

      Thanks!

I've been looking forward to trying this since I saw how many blackberry blossoms there were- but didn't get my kit out 'til today (being a disorganised sort of person), and didn't realise quite *how* big the bucket was...

So, should I just put a bit of cloth over the hole, so's no bugs decide to die happy, and it's OK?

Did one of these come with the kit?

I've never done this - just use water. Why metobiosulphate?

There wasn't a complete kit, just a selection of random bits (I bought the demi-john from a charity shop), but I got an airlock and matching bung for the demi-john from a local brewing shop.

It's all I've paid full price for yet

The chemical kills any bugs that get into the bubbler, it also inhibits the growth of algae.

              Cheers, Tony.
