Hi Jules,
Dave Line's two books are very good:
The Big Book of Brewing is a terrific all round guide for a beginner.
Brewing Beers Like Those You Buy has the basic methods outlined, but is more of a recipe book, once you know what you're doing. Great for replicating particular styles that you know you like.
The first one would be ideal if you've never brewed before.

i have a 'brewzer' home brew kit, which is excellent for first time brewers, there's a choice of kits to use in it - the bitter and IPA are quite good.
A friend of mine brews our homebrew beers for a beer festival we hold - he bought the basic kit (buckets and other paraphanalia) and then just buys various packs to make the beers (widely available from homebrew shop websites). There's a huge variety and apparently they're dead easy to make - i think most come with instructions. There's vegetable growing in the family, but I must be adopted
Happy Gardening!
