How much did you set up cost?

Hi,
I was thinking of looking into starting to make my own wine. My dad and sister did it years ago. My dads was ok but my sisters was undrinkable but cleaned the outside drains pretty well. My granddad use to make everything into wine think my mom said he once made dandelion wine and that was nice.
Anyway I was looking around at the prices of start up kits and they seem to vary a bit around here.
So I was wondering how much peeps have paid for their set up and what would you buy new or second hand?

I bought some second hand Demi johns off eBay for very little (collect only), already owned a big food grade bucket from making elderflower cordial and then bought yeast etc from Morrisons. Not much else needed but my fresh fruit and sugar.

hi ,you can get starter kits for about £50 the only thing i would recommend that you get either extra or get a kit that has them is a hydrometer (to check the abv) and a syphon with a filter on one end (stops you sucking up to much sediment) and a tap on the other (stops spillages when filling bottles) apart from that any kit will do ,i get most of my stuff from wilkos but there are loads of sites and places to get starter kits also cjj berrys winemaking recipes is a good read for ideas ,good luck

Car boot sale £5 for a load of demijohns and a huge box of stuff.

2 demijohns, bucket, tea towel, funnel, sieve and an airlock.
May be able to pick up used items althoiugh in a charity shop 2-3 weeks back they were selling DJ's at about the same cost as new. So little pointless.

May get by with £15 for the above.
Likely £18 - £20 more realistic if new.

I have bought all kinds of stuff for making fruit wine kit wine and all grain beer if you want any advice on what to get, what batch size do you want to make the choice is 1 gallon/4.5L or 5 gallon/23L or bigger. I started with a wilko starter kit which was OK but the only thing really reuseable was the demijohn. Also if your near redhill surrey any time soon you can have a load of bits as I am about to by a small commercial brewery so will not bother with much home brew anymore.

Hi Simon. Afraid I will be no where near your place ant time soon I'm afraid.
Your small brewery venture sounds interesting. Is it for your own personal use or are you branching out and selling it to others?

I am negotiating to buy a very small (200L batch size) commercial brewery that currently sells to a range of pubs & beer festivals all over the place. The seller has been running it as a hobby but doesn't have the time for it. I plan to scale it up after I get to grips with everything and eventually have it as my main source of income.
