  • Pear & Ginger Cider as featured in December issue

.........have a go at the Pear and Ginger cider recipe that was on page 31 of the December issue of GYO. I have received all the "technical" bits - hydrometer and potions etc., So I just need to purchase the fruit today. Instead of demijohns I will be using empty 5ltr wine containers as there will be no pressure to start with. Watch this space hic!!!!!

The recipe seems easy enough to follow. Apples and pears purchased but will press them tomorrow as I forgot that I am teaching this afternoon

Pear & Ginger Cider as featured in December issue

Here are my progress photos of the Pear & Ginger cider as featured in GYO December issue (page 31) I have never made any home brew before so here goes! Hubby used to make it when we lived in England, hence the fruit press. I had to buy the "pills & potions" and airlocks on-line. I am using an empty 5ltr wine container as a demijohn.
Because of an arthritic left thumb I used my food processor to pulp the apples and pears before putting them into the fruit press - worked absolutely fine. I extracted 2 1/2 litres of juice from the 7kgs of fruit. With the pulp that was left over at the end of pressing I am using some to make an apple & pear loaf cake - a slightly adapted Mary Berry recipe. Watch this space for progress reports and of course the sampling.

Lovely, let us know how you get on, would love to give it a try. Maybe get a few berries in there as well.

On the 9th January I added the pectolase and the cider yeast.

Day 4 photo, a nice frothy head forming on top of the cider.
