    eggs do last for ages, (well past the use by date on the box) to test if eggs are still fresh, drop them into a tall jug of water, if they sink they are fine, if they rise half way, they need eating soon, and if they float, don't eat them

      I read ages ago that you can preserve eggs by coating the shells with lard,wipe it off and repeat twice more.Then just store in egg boxes in a cool place,they last for about 6 months.Haven't tried it but have always meant to.You could just google "ways to preserve eggs",I think this is quite common in the States.
