I'm sure there was a thread like this a couple of days ago.
I get my 1lb jars from one of my cousins who is a bee keeper at about 25p each. They have plastic screw top lids so are OK for most uses.
The keepers in his local association all order together so they get massive discounts direct from a manufacturer.
Try finding your local association and see if they do a similar thing and they may let you place your order in with theirs. It's to their advatage as well as the bigger the quantities they order of each type the bigger the discount and then delivery costs come down as well.I am certain that the day my boat comes in, I'll be at the airport.

I buy Smart Price Mint Sauce from Asda -- the jars are just the right size for chutney, and the lids are vinegar proof. At 15p each it's not too bad if you don't need hundreds.
Any ideas for gallons of cheap mint sauce. . . . . . . . ?What is this life, if full of care,

It can be stirred in to anything with lamb, of course, but I add some to my homemade mayonnaise for a lovely fresh flavour. Same with a vinaigrette dressing.
Try it with beef and pork as well, and it will give a lift to potatoes that maybe don't have the flavour you thought they would.

Having just spent half an hour looking at various recomended sites for jars I still couldn't find anywhere that could beat 15p for the mint sauce from Asda.
Same goes for the 27p Smart Price Marmalade (454g) or 25p Smart Price Pickle (292g).
It seems like complete madness to be buying Smart Price Pickle just to use the jars for home made pickle/chutney for Christmas Pressies but once you add postage to the online shops that sell jars they are working out at well over 50p for the bigger sizes.
I wonder if anyone will want half a tonne of Smart price Marmalade on freecycle... in a bucket?!
*edit* I haven't completely lost it; I have already asked on freecycle for empty jars but none available! */edit*Last edited by vikkib; 18-09-2009, 09:10 AM.

I wish I'd seen that before buying twelve jars of marmalade... especially as we don't like marmalade!
I'm a bit concerned that the lids from the mint sauce still smell minty even after being washed in hot, soapy, water, put through the dishwasher AND boiled in a pan of water for 5 minute! Yikes! Oh well, they're on the chutney now!Attached Files

I wouldn't use them for jams though, lemon curd (Asda or Tesco) 27p-ish, less pongyWhat is this life, if full of care,

I'm very tempted by the 4p curry sauce at Asda but that's going to be super-very-pongy I fear!

But even if the lids smell you could use the jars for jam and cover the jam with wax discs and then cellophane discs secured with elastic bands. As the jam cools the cellophane becomes tight across the jar, so the jar is sealed. Once open you could just cover with cling film or foil if you didn't have a clean lid.Julie
