I've not had a problem with strings normally I get them before that stage but a couple of my bean plants went on strike during the bad bad bad weather and produced beans with no beans in. They seem to be back to normal now though there are noticably less coming.

Freezer
My dad used to freeze them by the carrier-bag load in a chest freezer and they'd keep us going for months.
