Sterilising jars in microwave?

Hi,
Can jam and storage jars be effectively sterilised (after proper washing) in a microwave... instead of the usual oven ways?

I always sterilise jam jars in the microwave, just clean them as normal and rinse, but leave them 'wet'. then pop them into the microwave for about a minute.

Just don't do what OH did and pour boiling water into a kilner jar, they explode

You have to leave the jar a little bit damp, as microwaves work by heating up the water particles in food. The jar will sterilize fine this way.

...and whatever you do, use a cloth to pick them up - they will be VERY hot!

Never thought of this. Much easier than using pan of boiling water. Will have to try it.

Ok will try this next time, I have also broken a kiln jar by pouring boiling water in. If using kiln jars is it ok to put the seals in or what is the best way to sterilise these jars.

If you have a dishwasher, the jars will be sterilised after being dish-washed as the powder/tablets contain bleaching agents

i sterilised some jars in the m/wave last year and was told to put water in them....just about blew the m/wave up - water all over the place! just use the oven now!

I was them and put them in the oven.

But I think the boiling Jam would do a good job on its own.

Not sure how effective the microwave is for sterilizing but about a year ago I had the microwave warming some food for a couple of minutes and when I opened the door an earwig walked out.

So not hot enough to cook an earwig then? Actually, the micro method seemed to work well for my bottles.....if I have any probs with them not being sterilised I'll let you know.
