My leeks are hard in the middle

just been out to pick the first of my leeks and when i was chopping them i noticed that they had a hard core - is this normal? and are they ok to use like this (making leek and potato soup for tea)?

sorry so many q's today - will try and actually contribute something useful later on!!!!!

found my answer when i searched on musselborough leeks! some of them had started to bolt i think and that is why! so no need for answers for once!!!

If mine have bolted (gone to flower) I find the texture of the centre changes and you get a kind of solid core (looks a bit like a stick of lemongrass). If ithe core's not too hard, then I do chop it up with the rest of the leek, but if its gone too stick-like, I bung that bit on the compost.

As said above, they've bolted but you can still eat the surrounding bits.
