Inspired by my 15 year old stick blender just breaking down on me ; and apart from Ollie moving in and becoming your own personal sous chef...what have you found to be an absolute genius buy or 'can't do without' item.

[Luckily I had my multichef which I got out, dusted down and whizzed my lottie soup up in.]

I would like to nominate the 'Magic Sponge'. It is a white sponge that you can get in blocks and can pretty much get any dirt off of anything round the house. Especially good for cleaning pencil marks off of white plant labels.

Well- if I can't have an Ollie (or a 30 years older version to be precise) I will have to make do with my Kitchen Aid as it makes me feel so competent!
Or my next long-term idea - a complete kitchen re-vamp with proper marble worktops!

Mine would be between Microfibre cloths, Kenwood chef and my new baby 2 litre pressure cooker that we bought for camping but use most days at home instead of the larger one so it never got packed away with the other camping stuff.

Hi Flum - are you going to use your new Crab Apple for jelly? I'm asking because I am getting a new Maslin pan for Xmas and I already have the Malus Red Sentinel in the garden laden with fruit - so the pan may be on my list of must- haves!

I shan't this year - the tree is only small and the fruits it has I love for their decorative properties. However, in years to come I might. I have crab apples in the freezer from a friend's tree - they are John Downey, bigger but more yellowy-red. It's a lovely tree though, Red Sentinel, isn't it?

Hi Flum - me again. My Red Sentinel is great - but it is getting rather big. I shall be pruning it back soon - it is not a tip bearer - and that means I'll be pruning out some of the fruit too. The red crab apples stay on the tree for ages during the winter and they are like red decorations - they will only come off when the birds start eating them.
Sorry to hijack the thread folks but Flum has just planted one of these crab apple trees!
