juice extractor

Today, via Freecycle, I have been given a steam juice extractor. The make is HB Safter, originally bought from W R Loftus. Luckily the instruction sheet is with it in it's original box as I cannot find mention of it through Google.

It neesd a good clean and a new drain tube - original rubber one still in place - now I need ideas to use it for. I have crabapples and blackberries to do but what else have you used it for?

Oh woe is me! Does no one have a steam juice extractor? Am I just a lonely voice in the wilderness?

Hello Suky, I use mine for any fruit I want to make into jelly or wine. I have found that the best fit for a new hose for mine is the pipe off my wine syphon (couple of quid from Wilkinsons) but yours may have a different size outlet.

Thanks for that, Shirl. Tried it today for the first time using some windfall apples, juice seemed a little watery but will persevere as I have a stack of damsons to use for jelly.
I got a new length of tubing from the aquarium shop, fish safe and therefore human safe (tropical fish are far more sensitive than us) also had to fix a tiny hole in the juice collecting portion where the aluminium had corroded, used aquarium silicone sealant, water and heat resistant and no taste taint either.

I have one that I havent used for years but used for apples, pears,all types of currants,gooseberries and sloes.
If the juice appears watery put a stopper or clamp off the tube and leave on the heat,this concentrates and sterilizes the juice giving maximum flavour extraction,
you can juice large amounts of sloes and concentrate with this,using the concentrate to make an instant sloe gin by diluting with gin and adding sugar to taste.

Thanks for that, tried it with the damson and success, much thicker. Made lovely jelly too.
One thing I did learn, make sure you have a firm grip on the tube! Slipped out of my fingers (when the pot was almost drained, luckily) and a little juice goes a long way
