I was always led to believe that acorns were poisonous but recently found a recipe for acorn flour. Has anyone every tried them and if so what do they taste like?

They were eaten a lot here during the war.
You can buy roasters still to turn infront of an open fire. They're mostly used for chestnuts now- but if you ask an 'oldie' what the contraption is- they all say it's for roasting acorns

Thanks for that link Nicos now I know why they taste terrible raw, tried one in my youth but the only tannin I had heard of when that young was what you got if caught being naughty
In Korea, an edible jelly named dotorimuk is made from acorns and Dotori guksu are Korean noodles made from acorn flour or starch.Last edited by bearded bloke; 20-10-2010, 11:18 AM.He who smiles in the face of adversity, has already decided who to blame

But why would you? You'd have to be fairly clemmed to even try!Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

At the risk of being ridiculed.......If you peel and slightly crush/break acorns and soak overnight in a big pan of water then strain in the morning this removes most of the tannin, then heat over the fire/gas stove in a pan so they roast to a light chocolate brown.
crush small and add to 50:50 mixture of milk /water and boil, strain&add sugar to taste, tastes like a cross between bad coffee and good hot chocolate.Rather an aquired taste, but have made it with scouts on backwoods weekends 6-7 times (nobody died yet)don't be afraid to innovate and try new things
