The flowers are unmistakeably elder! Lucky you...

Have a smiff of them, you can also tell by the smell......they smell of Elderflower Cordial!

I'm not picking the flowers, the berries are far too valuable (to make port)

I made some pontack last year too but not tried it yet so don't know if it's as tasty as it's meant to be but Hugh FW said it was better for leaving so I'm being good.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I am going to forage for some to make some fizz and cordial next week - there is an abundance of elder trees along the old railway track that runs through Norwich, covered with herbs, flowers and plants that are useful for eating and winemaking that not many other people seem to realize. A nice stroll home in the sun with some secateurs and a bag is in order

Why would you need secateurs? Are you planning to collect something else as well? We always manage to collect elder (flower or berries) with hands, or occasionally a pocket knife!
Foraging is one of the few occasions when I appreciate the supermarket carrier bag! Fits in a pocket when empty, holds quite a lot, and doesn't cause comment if some nosey person meets you when you are on the way home!

I have very weak wrists and trying to get elder off a branch is quite difficult sometimes, plus the secateurs give me an extra few inches of height to grab with

true about the carrier bag - you look completley normal with a tesco's bag full of hedgerow rather than the traditional trug basket, i think most would get funny looks with one of those in an urban area!
