  • Wild garlic is starting to get to usable size in our local woods now. I've some leeks to use up too, so leek, potato and wild garlic soup may be on the menu this week

      • I was thinking of foraging rosehips today when I was in the gully looking for lost chook. That way I could tell the weeds inspector that the briar rose is not a problem since I collect all the hips. That should work. Now to go find the recipe for getting rid of the hairy bits and how to cook them.

        • I've never heard of wild garlic before.

I really need to get some books on this stuff.

          • Just ask on here Darwin and you won't need books.

There's a new group called Forage Cardiff - last Monday they were in Roath Park Wild gardens picking wild garlic! I know somewhere much closer to home and more discreet than there

                • Is there a website? I could do with finding something like that near us. Am always on the look out for stuff to forage but always seem to miss it

Did forage a free book on mushrooms & toadstools if that counts

                      • Wild garlic and sorrel, both of which got souped along with yesterday's land cress. And very nice soup it was too.

                        • Picked a good handful of wild garlic today and mixed it in with our salad... yum!

                          • Is there anything forgeable at this time of year? Things I should be looking out for? I saw something that looks a but like Burdock, and there's a load of wild fennel growing around near the burdock suspect. Any defining features of Burdock? Any uses for fennel aside from chewing it?
Forgive me for my pages of text.

                            • I missed the darn hips again! Must be just one of those busy times of year, when I'm trying to get wood and hay and animals organised, and doing what I can with the harvest. Better make a plan for next year.

                              • Elder is coming into blossom now - good for cordial, champagne, with gooseberries or dip the heads in a light batter, fry and dust with sugar.
