    • Does scrumping count?

The house next door is only used for 2-3 weeks a year and they have an awesome crop of plums this year. We had to get in quick as they usually turn up in the summer and our other neighbour often has the lot!

And blackberries from the hedge of a holiday home where we cut the grass.

        • Yesterday, a small handful of wild raspberries from the banks of the River Tavy, near Fingle Bridge. Very sweet, but was digging pips out of my fillings for ages afterwards!

And the chanterelles were well and truly scoffed (apart from the ones you are drying!)

                      • I hadn't realised they were redcurrants - thought they might have been cherries. Are they on a deserted garden site?

No, they are in the middle of the woods. Cherries too at the end of the road and at work. The boss is more than happy for me to pick them.

                            • We've just picked a pound and a half of blackberries from the lane by our house There are *masses* more that will ripen over the next couple of weeks so we'll be in blackberry jam/ice-cream/wine/-and-apple-crumble heaven
Is there anything that isn't made better by half an hour pottering in the veg patch?

                              • In the never ending hunt for blackberries, I ducked into a little cul-de-sac nearby and onto the field at the end - as usual, loads of brambles with no berries - but BONUS! i found a cherry plum tree! i stripped all 14 cherry plums off it!

yep, here on the edge of suburbia, with well maintained parks, loads of managed common and farm fields within sight of my house, there is precious little wild food .... unless you like hawthorn and box hedge ..... even a trip into the countryside nearby is little better ....
