    • We've had a good foraging day today. From our lane we got a few blackberries and rose hips (if I don't pick them now the blinking hedge-cutters will blitz 'em), then a decent haul of damsons. I picked some elderberries from a traffic-free riverside location, then picked loads more from my favourite secluded corner of a supermarket car park. DH sits nearby, car facing the right way, engine running, to make a quick getaway - he finds me very embarrassing when I do this!
Is there anything that isn't made better by half an hour pottering in the veg patch?

        • He'll eat the elderberry & apple jelly and drink the elderberry cordial happily enough though!

          • Gathered half a bucket of blackberries and a bucket of hedgerow apples. Apple and blackberry jelly methinks?

            • Picked a b couple of pounds of damsons - there were plenty more, but with all the other jams and jellies I've made, a couple of jars of damson jelly will be plenty.

I've discovered that you can stone damsons using a cherry stoner, which is much easier and less messy than boiling them up and picking out the stones when they are cold. The stones don't come out clean like cherries, but I simmered them till the fleshy bits still attached were soft and gave them a quick rub through a sieve and added the result to the stoned fruit - much easier than doing that to the whole fruit. Strained the cooked fruit in a sieve and will make pie with the fruit, jelly with the liquor.

              • At the plot I gathered half a carrier of peaches, half a carrier of black grapes (before the wasps get them all) I also dug some Desiree potatoes which are pretty carp. I used horse manure last year and brought in a host of weeds which swamped the tatties! The area these tatties were in is slightly shaded throughout the summer by a big willow tree. I anticipate using this area fro my spring cabbage because the willow drops its leaves for the winter allowing the spring cabbage to get full light.

                  • A couple of months ago I spotted a wild apple tree and a wild pear tree .... over the weekend, I went back to pick some .... I picked 2 carrier bags full in minutes ....
I went deeper into the overgrowth, found several more apple and pear trees .... I'll be going back at the weekend with several big bags .... hopefully I'll have enough time to press the whole lot before they rot ....
I also found loads of sloes .... enough to make up for the lack of sloes in the place I found them last year .... and rose hips .... millions of them .... and all easily pickable .....

                        • Not exactly today.............. but...........

Yesterday I went with a neighbour to see a house he is interested in renting, from a church dioscese. The house has been empty for around 6 months and when I looked into the garden it was surrounded by blackberry bushes, all laden with beautiful fruit

Well, long story short, I got a good picking and this is the result

                          • About a third of a bag of rosehips. I would have got more, but it was a spur of the moment thing and I had the dogs in the car.
Fingers crossed the weather says good enough for a mushroom spotting trip on the weekend.

                            • Enough elderberries to make a thimble full of wine. Bloody wind and birds beat me to them. Have to look elsewhere.

On the upside, if I manage to haul myself out of bed nice and early tomorrow there are big juicy blackberries in abundance - easily enough for making some jelly and perhaps if time/energy/weather permits another gallon of wine.

All good in theory, got to get and pick em first!
