  • Field Mushrooms, not sure whats happening its a bit late in the season really for field mushrooms, but I was out with the dog for a walk this morning and happened across one in my good mushroom field then another and before you know it I had a brimming hat full. I barely covered a 5th of the field. I know what I'll be having the next couple of days.....

Scrambled eggs of the chooks, some super fresh bread and lashings of salted welsh butter. Top banana.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

No mention of eating the mushrooms!

          • D'oh....

Well they were fried, with a little olive oil a good sized knob of butter and a sprinkle of salt to draw out the moisture. They were equally delish.

Hi what do you do with the Rowan berries. I have a tree in my garden (at least I think it is a rowan) full of orange berries, no idea you could eat them?
Updated my blog on 13 January

              • you can make rowan berry jelly or add some to make a 'hedgerow jelly', i'll have a look to see if I can find a recipe online if not i'll get the 'book' out tonight and have a look for you. The rowan berry jelly has a lovely 'jewel-like' pale orangy/pinky colour. I'm really lucky as the residential home near us has a crabapple tree that is loaded and two rowans which are also full of berries

                • You can Stella but not direct from the tree they need to be cooked to reduce the toxicity. You can add it to bulk up a hedgerow jelly or add it to rich game meat so I'm told. Though I haven't tried it as I'm not that fond of game.

                  • Managed to forage elderberries and rose hips today. Hoping to make rose hip cordial and elderberry wine with the haul. 😀

                    • I bagged a hat full of chanterelles yesterday and had them as a starter before my chicken kevin.

I think I spotted some horn of plenty too, but need a little more research before I bag that one to.

                      • I'm not having much luck finding rosehips. There was a fantastic crop at them at a car park in Bewdley the other day but I was on my way to a meeting and couldn't really stop to pick! Other than that, I've seen no rosa rugosa - just not something we're well off for round these 'ere parts.
Is there anything that isn't made better by half an hour pottering in the veg patch?

                        • What about dog rose MrsC, that is quite abundant in our hedgerows.

                          • There's a little smattering here and there, but no big outcrops. It doesn't help that our hedges are blitzed by hedge-cutters at this time of year.

Foraging is so often potluck. I decided to walk the dog somewhere different and just stumbled on the rose hips. And there were loads of them all along the last third of the walk. For me, I'm struggling to find sloes. It's mainly down to be completely new to foraging. Maybe in a few years, I'll have mapped out where are good places to go for certain things. Hope you manage to find another good crop of rose hips! 😊🌹

                              • Yesterday, whilst at the allotment site, I found a few more elderberries to pick (I realised after researching elderberry wine recipes that I didn't really have enough). I also found two crab apple trees, absolutely laden with crab apples. I picked a load, but barely made a dent in the harvest. I think I'll have a go at some crab apple jelly. 😃
