  • Thanks Littlefox. I'm off out shortly to buy some jam sugar from the shop in the next village, and I intend to have a really good look round the edge of the car park while I'm there!
Is there anything that isn't made better by half an hour pottering in the veg patch?

For me, I'm struggling to find sloes. It's mainly down to be completely new to foraging. Maybe in a few years, I'll have mapped out where are good places to go for certain things. Hope you manage to find another good crop of rose hips! 😊🌹

Best time to spot them IMO, is early spring - they flower before they leave up, so are quite easy to spot from a distance - you only need to get close to check for the spines - and then leaves when they leaf up later on!

      • I couldn't resist an invitation like this!

I collected loads from the ground and there are still masses in the trees. I used a few in chutney this morning and have the rest to sort out when I get back later.

Oh, a friend has just dropped round an entire crate of damsons! I'm going to need a second freezer at this rate! Damson port here we come.

            • Nice haul CT
When I find boletes I throw the spongey bits with the spores in around in the garden (do it with all fungi actually) but I have boletes growing in the garden now
Worth a try if you have a suitable spot

              • Oh I'll DEFINITELY be trying that VC. Great idea!
I couldn't believe how many Hegdehogs there were! I'm going back in a couple of days with a basket! Today's haul came home in a small plastic bag I had in my pocket - I always like to have a means of carrying home any unexpected finds.

                • This is why I wear a cloth hat creemteez.

Today I had a hat full of field mushrooms when walking the dog at breakfast, and went out at lunchtime and came back with a hat full of chanterelles. The woods are full of mushrooms at the moment, most I can't identify, but slowly slowly catchy monkey.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

                  • Saw a load of parasols coming through last week - bet they're all soggy and earwiggy now after yesterday's rain

                    • The only negative to the rain is you've got to rinse and spoon all the extra moisture out when cooking.

Its hard to get a good fry on a damp day.

                      • Just foraged another boat load of damsons, even though I'm running out of space. There's another spot which has bigger ones, that are closer to small plum size. I have no room for those either, but will that stop me from picking them? Well someone has to....

                          • 1lb walnuts (plenty more to drop from the tree)
5lb crab apples (could have got 50lb, except we simply can't use them and have no space to store them)
2lb red rowan (why are all the berries so high up?!?!)
1lb orange rowan (the rest of these were too high too)
5lb yellow rowan (loads of trees with low hanging fruit, several trees untouched as we have no more space)
4 hazlenuts (yes, just 4 nuts - we'll have to be earlier next year)

                              • 2 kilos of chestnuts. Massive ones.
Problem is, I'm not a big fan of them, and asked if any of my mates would like some- so many said yes, I'm going to have to go find some more
