best to wait for the first frost? or shall i pick earlier before everyone else gets to them and bung them in the freezer for a week?!?!?!?!QUOTE]
Down here they rot on the tree by September time. People are out picking at the mo - never any by the first frost
A weed is a plant that has mastered every survival skill except for learning how to grow in rows
Whoop whoop - coming away from the school garden today I spotted 5 wild plum trees in the hedgerow. They are sloe coloured and a bit bigger than sloes, no thorns, I tasted one - a bit sharp but definitely sweet. I'm going to wait for a little while for them to sweeten up some more, then go along with a step ladder to pick them.
I've picked plenty of wild plums, blackberries need a while longer i think to get the best from them, - been picking plenty of marsh samphire through the summer but not been down recently. Will be trying for some mushrooms come the autumn but could do with someone to show me the ropes - i can only safely identify a couple.
not foraging as such but had some nice bass and mackerel too this season from my boat
More plums, blackberries and dewberries. Took some cuttings from the wild mint as it smells much nicer than any others I have here.
Here's a photo to show the difference between a dewberry (on the left) and blackberry (on the right). Dewberries have a dusty bloom, they're not shiny like a blackberry.
Dewberries grow close to the ground, like ground cover really. I've always found them in coastal areas - these were growing on grassed over sand dunes.
If its free it has to be good..... no effort involved in growing or pest prevention, not even any garden space given up to them........ I love foraging!!
I went cycling in the Elan Valley last weekend, and while taking part in a scavenging hunt with DD, we also picked some wild strawberries, blackberries and raspberries. I can't think of a better way to spend a sunny afternoon.
