  • Haven't yet, but I've found an apple tree, which appears to have naturally grafted with a crab apple, pretty much in the car park where I work. Need to go back and look, as I only noticed it by the scent of the apples yesterday when nipping out to the car and back.

Heavy scab on it, but I'm sure they'll be fine for jam / cooking / what ever.

    • Chris and any other locals - do you want to forage my apples?

      • Might be able to swap a few (bags? ), jostaberry cuttings and my aid for some eggs, aye. Where to you by now? Y'ere or there?

Seren wants to come and see you again - she's been batting on about your dogs and bluebells for a while.

        • I'm over by yer but should really go down there. A couple of trees are laden but so tall you'd need ladders or a trained monkey. Lots of windfalls that are fine if you use them up quickly. You don't need me to be here anyway - you know where they are - just don't touch the russets
Tell Seren the bluebells are finished but I have another dog for her to play with

            • What's happening to the russets then butt? I dont have any ladders, but can probably fashion a big old long stick!

              • They're not ready to pick yet - but dangle within reach to tempt you!! I have ladders but they're a swine to get out of the garage. A big long old stick would whack 'em down

                    • I got a carrier bag full of windfall apples today from a big old tree where there used to be a farm years ago. Don't know what the variety is, but they are so sweet raw, go fluffy like bramleys when cooked, and even then need no sugar at all.

They were all peeled, cored, sliced, and blanched in about thirty minutes.
(I really love my l@kel@nd apple peeler gadget, even though I only get it out once a year )

                          • Yesterday - collected a carrier bag full of chestnuts from the woods. Unfortunately lots of them were too tiny to use, but managed to use a cupful in a nut roast. Must go back and get some more, but be a bit more discerning about which ones I collect next time!

                            • Well, this thread has now convinced me that foraging will be a new hobby of mine! I love the idea of a walk through the woods and grabbing some of natures free food.
