I wouldn't pick mushrooms in public areas, unless they are up a tree. Too many dogs about. But yes it probably is a good time now for field mushrooms, giant puffballs and so on.

                  • I've just seen that the unruly multiple plant/hedge thing that runs down the outside of our garden is full of raspberries.

I've been here 3 years and haven't seen them before which is a bit strange but never mind. The only way to reach them / pick them is from our garden.

Is it easy to make raspberry jam? I've never made jam before. It would be rude not to try considering how many rasps there seem to be out there.

                    • I think that sounds like an excellent idea gardening gal - it would seem ungrateful somehow not to make the most of them! Jam's not too bad to make if you've got a big enough pan . Raspberries also freeze brilliantly - they don't go smushy like some soft fruits, you can just open freeze and use later in the year .

                      • Doh! I never even thought about freezing them! The kids like fruit on their breakfast cereals, it would be good to freeze some for that.

Just need to wait for them to ripen a bit more now.

                        • Elderberries collected in the rain; they have been stripped from the stems and weighed ready to make elderberry vinegar after I have been shopping tomorrow.
I will be back to the same spot later in the week to collect blackberries and I may not be able to resist making more sloe gin-all 3 berries available within a few feet of each other well away from any roads 😄

                          • Cob nuts, just a few. I was surprised to discover they taste of absolutely nothing at all, so maybe I should leave them a week or two longer?

                            • More blackberries... have found a great spot behind our local pub. I don't think it's technically their garden ;0... am going to collect elderberries from the cemetery tomorrow/Weds and combine both to make some hedgerow jam.

                              • I'm off out for elderberries too tomorrow Noosner, with a view to making elderberry vinegar. I've never made it before but it sounds delicious. I'd like to make spiced elderberry cordial too, to have hot as a non-alcoholic mulled winter drink. I do drink, but sometimes an alternative is good!
