I've read this whole thread with interest. I really would like to investigate what is growing in my local area cos I always thought there was hardly anything but it seems I was wrong. I'm terrified of poisoning myself though and that's what's stopping me, blackberries are all I'm brave enough to pick.

Yesterday I picked just over a kilo of blackberries and used them, with cooking apples bought at an honesty stall in the local countryside, to make some blackberry apple jam, a jar of which will be entered in the church horticultural show tomorrow!

Went to see my friend's new allotment in the next village, and a chap told us to keep our eyes peeled for the plants people throw out, which they put in a box by the gate.
Well, there was a massive rhubarb crown in the box and he said it had been there for a while and was starting to dry out. What a pity, I sez. Do you want it? sez he. Yes, please! sez I.
So I lugged it home, chopped a lot of it away and potted the rest up till I can put it in its permanent position which will be where the spaghetti squash plant is now. Gave it a good soaking and fingers crossed.
Does that count as foraging??

Sweet chestnuts! Just under 3 kilos of 'em
Some are enormous, easily the size of the ones in the supermarket (I check just to snigger at the prices).

I've been mostly eating Himalayan Balsam nuts (seeds if you prefer), this week.
They are plentiful at the moment, and taste very much like a mild hazelnut when still pale. If they've started to dry off and become (black), these can get a bit stick in your teeth and dry your palate. You can store the blackened ones though and grind them up, they have a taste more like ground almonds when they mature.
In addition to my nuts, I'm also collecting lots of meadow waxcaps, the penny buns (porcini) are eluding me at the moment, but I live in hope that there will be a flush around the next corner.....I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.
