  • Can I use this sort of jar to store any preserves?

Some going on Freecycle and I need some more jars for preserving.

I've only used things with metal lids up 'til now in case the vinegar doesn't get on with the plastic.

Obviously I couldn't sterilise in the oven but was thinking I could use sterilising solution instead.

Sorry to say but no. They are fine for dry goods like spices etc but the vinegar will evaporate. The vinegar will not affect plastic but will rust metal. The way round it is to use jam skins, celophane, on the top of the jar and then a lid. the celophane keeps the vinegar fumes away from the lid. If you ask around your friends I am sure they will save you some jars which they would otherwise recycle.

Aha! I should have remembered the lids are lined with plastic for a reason!

      Thanks for the info!

Most of my friends are saving jars for their preserves at the moment but Ill certainly ask around and put a request on freecycycle in the meantime... could have sworn I had more stashed away but can't find them anywhere!

I save those jars and use them for rice, flour, pasta, breadcrumbs, teabags, sugar, etc.

I love those jars and I have used them for preserves - think I added a cellophane disc to the top of the contents.
The lid has a plastic part that can be removed - in fact the lid is a little container on its own I store small quantities of spices and seeds in the lid and bulkier items in the jar - BOGOF

            Don't reject them.

They are great for making Sauerkraut and other salt preserved veg.

KCN has used these in the past to make fantastic 'kraut. (Admittedly, there is little chance of it lasting long though...

Or pop the plastic thing out, decorate the inside of the lid with glitter and beads, put the plastic thing back in and then have a lovely pretty jar for putting bits in

Not really as you can't get an hermetic seal. OK if you are going to store the jam in the fridge and use it within a few weeks.

I've tried it, it doesn't work, the lids just pop off with the heat.

I use these for pickles and have had no problems over the last couple of years for onions, gherkins ,cauli and chilli's,and find they seal really well.don't recomend for jam though as the plastic inserts melt or get sucked in as they cool
