I am sure this has been asked before but can I use old pasta sauce jars for chutneys and jams? Thanks

You certainly can, I do. Just make sure they are well washed and sterilised.

Oh, be careful with jams. The lids still sometimes retain the smell of the original contents

Thank you! I was wondering about the lids so I just went and bought the wax disc and cellophane circles which I could use instead. I haven't before so it will be interesting to see how it goes

I just opened the packet and it doesn't contain the wax circles! Grrrrrr. Do I need these?

Nope, I never use wax circles. You could try rubbing the inside of the lids with a cut lemon - an old trick we used to use at the pub to get rid of the smell of Pernod on glasses.

Come to think of it, I could try that myself

or leave the lids with some bicarb in for a few days, that seems to work quite well

Please be careful with reusing old lids as the seal may not work properly on reusing .....and for anything containing vinegar the inside of the lid needs to be plasticided else it will rust......

Or you could use the cellophane and then put the lids on to protect it. I do that with anything that contains vinegar and it stops the lids rusting.

That's why I prefer the lids with a dimple in the middle. If it flattens out (you often hear them popping) then you know it has sealed. Any that don't pop get stored in the fridge and used quickly

How do you get the lids to pop after they've already been used for something else? I'm saving my old jars to use

Warm jars, hot jam. Screw lids on and leave to cool.

Yes, and I sterilize the lids in boiling water, just before using, so they are still warm as well
