  • Pathetically excited, lol!

I made my first ever jam today! The only thing I had in the garden that was ready for preserving was rhubarb - I remembered my Granny making rhubarb and fig jam, so I bought some figs, harvested my rhubarb and... I have jam!!! Real, proper jam that set, looks pretty and tastes superb (if I do say so myself!). I can't remember what it was supposed to taste like (I have a feeling it was 'grown up' jam and I was fobbed off with the strawberry!) but it's a warm, almost spicy taste. The sort of thing that's good with a nice cheese like Wensleydale.

I've got my jars (all three of them ) on prominent display and I've been dipping my fingers into the spare bit all day! And to think, I'm a grown woman of almost 40... hee hee!

Well done you! Wish my rhubarb had been better this year - we got one stalk before I decided it was best to leave it alone.

Sounds lovely... Our rhubarb has been fairly feeble this year too, think it's in need of some TLC! May beg you for the recipe next year

Last year I did rhubarb and ginger jam as we had so much rhubarb but this year it's not growing very well 1/2 dozen small stalks so far and nothing ready to pick for a while. Never had problem growing rhubarb before.

Well done seahorse! I've never made jam myself, but fancy giving it a go this year. What recipe did you use? Bernie

It was from "Jams, Pickles and Chutneys: Best Kept Secrets of the Women's Institute":

Several people here recommended it and I must say it has some lovely sounding stuff, plus it's all really clear and straightforward.

All my rhubarb went into 1 Litre of Vodka and 1 Litre of Gin!

Really looking forward to the rhubarb and custard when I syphon it off!
