  • Drying Mashed Potato

    Hi
Has anyone tried drying mashed potato in their dehydrator? If you have, was it worth it?
Am overwhelmed with spuds at the moment and haven't even got on to the main crop yet, so looking for ways of preserving them
    best wishes

You could send me some Lost all of mine to blight and from 30 buckets had enough marble sized spuds for two meals

Good luck with the dehydrator thing - fancy one of those myself to dry the garden out a bit
    Happy Gardening,

If it wasn't for the postage, would be delighted to send you some!
I've grown too many, planted 60 tubers last year and although I had a fair few, grew them rather badly! So this year cut down to 40 tubers, learned a lot of lessons and now got too many.
I didn't get a huge crop from the International Kidney but the British Queen are prolific... no good for salads but baking and mashing, they're gorgeous.
      Oh well, next year...
      best wishes

Sorry to bring this up again, but can anyone let us know if whether pots can be dried?

My blighty spuds look fab BUT won't keep (and will go VILE - thank you to Peter for the rather too-graphic description...) and I've 40kg to 'do something' with, and maybe the same again in the ground to be dug up this week............

I've only so much freezer space, so dehydrating and stroring in air tight containers seems a really good idea....IF it works!

Sorry don't know but you could let us know if you try it - sounds a bit too much like SMASH for my liking but that's probably just memories of those aliens from my childhood!

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Scrub, peel if desired, cut into very thin slices(you can also shred them)Blanch slices for 4 mins, drain and dry.
May discolour slightly. If this does not appeal, sprinkle with lemon juice or put into salt water while you work.
This recipe involves stretching butter muslin over the plate-rack above the range,so you would have to (in the absence of a plate rack)dry in a dehydrator or oven.
(from preserving book of years ago, author unknown as a long since gone puppy ate the covers!)
