Pear Jam

For the first time ever my pear tree has decided to be generous this year. I intend making pear chutney and today have had a go at a pear jam recipe. I'm not sure I'm going to be happy with the jam (if it ever cools so I can try it properly)

As I have so so many pears has anyone got a reliable tried and tested recipe for pear jam and any ideas for using the pears other than jam, chutney and eating them fresh and stewed.

Not made pear jam, I usually stick to deserts like crumbles or upside down cakes.

I'm going to need those kinds of recipes too because my trees have tons and tons of pears. Where I live people like to ferment them in a barrel for a while, then take the mush to a distillery to be made into strong pear spirits called hruskovica (say it something like hroosh-kove-itsa). In fact almost any kind of fruit is made into a vitsa of some sort.

I've already got cherries, apples, blackberries and blueberries in the freezer for crumbles, sponges and pies.

Don't think I've ever had Pear Jam before, my daughter has a few on a tree in her garden, was going to try poaching them in Whisky.....well it might work.

I've tried several pear jam recipes over the years and they are all pretty disgusting (IMO). I have a fabulous pear and apple chutney recipe that really is delicious ( will add link) but have found that stewing down ready for using in pies and crumbles the best option for preserving. You can do the odd poached pear in wine, pear butter, wine and Delias pickled pears which I also gave a go but pear tartin still came up tops. I'll keep my eye on this thread in the hope that someone will post something I haven't tried!
