Slow cooker - v low heat, cook food in a closed pot for hours and hours
Pressure cooker - short cooking time in pressure vessel. Not to be trusted, equivelant of having a bomb on the cooker.

Actually Hazel, modern pressure cookers are quite safe AS LONG AS YOU FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS. Main thing I've found is to let the thing cool down and the pressure reduce before trying to open. Very good results on curries and stews. Good for those of us out all day. I've heard good reports on slow cookers, but I'm one of those people who don't like to go to work and leave appliances switched on.

Hazel I was very nervous the first time I used a pressure cooker (over 20 years ago) expected the thing to explode and take me with it, but soon got used to it and could not live without one now, its used every Sunday for our veg, also for stews and I use it for making jam.

Mum used it a lot when we were little, and it always seemed to be a hissing bad-tempered monster - tho' I suspect I was psycologically scarred for life the day that she did a rice pudding and filled it a bit full and we had rice pudding all over the kitchen ceiling.

You've seen Chicken Run? Substitute rice pudding for gravy...

                  *UPDATE*

I think I might have found a very similar recipe. Hope to make one this coming week sometime and will report for those who are interested.
