  • Porridge...

Now that the colder weather is upon us, I wondered how many of you eat porrige and why.
    If not why not?
And do what recipies do people use...and toppings.

I am just being converted as I understand oats are really good for you and it is supposed to curb midmorning munchies ( as if!!!.....)

I prefer it made with milk and a mixture of organic rolled oats ( for the 'pop' factor) and flaked oats for the creamy 'gloup' factor.

Toppings for me are raisins, banana and crunchy sugar .

OH likes 50:50 milk to water - a tiny pinch of salt ( what's that for???) and maple syrup topping.

I love porridge and I make it often. I was told by our Occupaional Health Nurse at work that it is great for breakfast as the oats release their "stuff" slowly during the morning which stops you wanting to snack mid morning.

I eat mine a bit like your OH - cook it in all milk with a pinch if salt and then a good dollop of Golden Syrup mixed in. If I remember, I mix it up the night before - makes it really creamy.

There's always Mmm Homer biscuits as a way to get your oats too.

I like it cooked with milk and topped with golden syrup too. Scrumptious.

I think oats are overrated - if I have Mmm Homer biscuits for breakfast, I still want some more at elevenses, and as Scarey says, they've got LOADS of oats in

I have porridge every other morning, love it, but has to be runny, made with milk (the only time I have milk) and topped off with acacia honey (local) or one of my own fruit syrups.

It was -8 this morning so had eggy bacon and mushrooms!

Hello everyone, (new to the forum)

I have porridge every morning too, made with half milk, half water, with any dried fruit I happen to have in the cupboard.

                DH has it with honey.

Clare, where do you get your golden syrup from in France, or is it a UK import lol

                  Nightmare isn't it ,
I tend to beg food parcels from people who come from UK to visit. I did manage to get some when I was in Paris last month but I usually have to "buy it in". Same problem with Baked Beans and Oxo cubes. OH used to hanker after Cheddar Cheese but we have found that Cantal is a pretty good substitute.
Next time you're "passing" drop in, I'm sure I have a spare tin around somewhere.

I love porridge, cheap brand (30p a bag?), soaked overnight in water. Then microwaved with milk to the ideal heat and consistency. Top with my own allotment fruit (frozen) or banana, apple, raisins etc.

Oats are really good for your heart: lower cholesterol, and ideal if wheat tends to bloat your stomach. They are also low-GI and release their energy slowly, making you feel fuller for longer.

OH would still rather have sausage and bacon for some reason

We buy our porridge from the local Corn Stores it cost 66p to fill one of those old fashioned glass sweetie jars.
Thinking about it I eat porridge any time of the day.

Mags, round here Champion and Intermarche both sell golden syrup and black treacle on their 'Brit' shelves and we also have a stall on one of the local markets run by a British couple who get all sorts of things, including a huge range of the organic stuff you might find difficult to find here.

But also sugar Hazel, and its the sugar that gives you a quick fix and leaves you panting for more very quickly afterwards.

For perfect low GI porridge the best topping is honey, as that, unlike sugar, gives you a slow release of energy and not a quick peak, followed by the inevitable sugar crash which makes you hungry again if you use sugar (either in porridge or homer biscuits).

Porridge is one of those food that only you can get right for yourself like scrambled eggs and rice pudding.
Have it everyday, milk and water half and half, that pinch of salt and it has to be organic rolled porridge oats, 3 1/2 minutes in the microwave then a desert spoon of locally produced honey stirred in. Keeps you going for hours.
