I have been told not to put a cross in the top of the sprouts as it lets water in when cooking, I do not put a cross in and just blanch them for about a min then cool under cold water to stop them cooking and then put them in the freezer

I think people put the cross in the stem, diana, not the top. This helps the tough stem to cook in the same time as the leafy top.

I, however, avoid them!

I'd also freeze them on trays first, then put them in bags. Theyre a devil to separate when theyre frozen together and you only want a few for that meal.

You don't put a cross in the top of the sprout, you do a small one in the stem end. If the sprouts are young and tender this isn't really necessary.

I once had a lengthy discussion at a Christmas dinner about which was the 'right' way, and we never settled it, choosing to just drink more beer instead!!

I prefer to eat my own quite small, and we steam all our veg, so I don't need to either.

i love sprouts - i kinda left mine on the plants too long tho, mainly cos my freezer was full - had some the size of tennis balls, loads the size of golf balls
eventually picked them - got 3 carrier bags full from 7 plants - gave them to my mother and she blanched and froze them for herself - must have been another carrier bag full which i left on the plants cos they were going rotten

i WILL take better care of them this year - and will get a good size chest freezer to keep them all in! (still struggling through the runner beans and caulis!)
