  • Lovely Leeks

This is a really simple and tasty way to serve leeks.
Steam leeks until tender (insert a sharpe knife to tell), then wrap each leek in a slice of ham. Place in an ovenproof dish, cover with cheese sauce and put some extra grated cheese on the top. Put in the oven at about 180c until bubbly and browning on the top.
    Then eat and enjoy.

There's a variation of the above gratin where you use chard stalks wrapped in a chard leaf rather than leeks wrapped in ham. Gorgeous!

Esther - do you have another good recipe for Chard? I have only managed to use it in soup so far as my other half thinks it is an acquired taste!

          chard

I love chard omelette! You boil or steam the chard for a few minutes and then you make an omelette with it. If you have the stalks you need to boil them for a couple of minutes longer. mmmmmm yummy!

            Cooking chard

Sorry everyone for the late response. I only stumbled upon this forum when the Kitchen Garden Mag one went offline. Have now stopped reading it as I just don't find it as good as it used to be. So I'm back here, and it's rather nice!

Chard gratin: I use a steamer. Put the chard leaves in the top bit so they get steamed, put the stalks in the bottom bit, in the water, so they get boiled. Keep it boiling gently for 15 min, then wrap each stalk in a leaf or two, line them up in an oven dish (the kind you use for lasagne), cover in cheese sauce and top with emmental or gruyère. Bake for 15 min at 180º.

Other recipe for chard: just use the leaves anywhere that you'd use spinach. I think that chard stalks, like beetroot, taste a bit earthy to some people. I love them, but some people can't stand them.
