  • OFFER OF FREE BOOK - The Cookery Year Published 1974 by Readers Digest

My lovely neighbour popped in today with 3 large old Readers Digest Books. She said she would throw them out if I didnt want them - thats a red rag to a bull to a bookaholic like me! She went on to mention that one of them she has a 2nd identical copy of and I immediately thought one of you guys might be able to make use of it.

The first 50 pages detail how to buy for quality, then there are 12 months of receipes (over 500) based on fresh food in season (a must for a grow your own grape!) with quotations on the top of each page too! From page 304 follows; basic cooking methods, a section on wine, a section on equipment and safety, a section on home freezing and a useful glossary of culinary terms. The book is hard back and although a little musty, very clean (my neighbour takes very good care of her things) and best of all its FREE!!!

It is quite heavy so I would prefer someone collected it (cup of tea, chinwag and garden tour included!) but pm if you want it even if you are miles away and I will at least put you on the reserve list.

I love old (and new) books - that's going to be a lucky grab for someone living close to you. Lots of good older recipes and methods I bet.

It does look quite good. For this month I shall try "Green Beans in Muscatel Sabayon Sauce"!

Pop me on the reserve list if no-one else else wants it!

I really want a copy of Robert Carrier's original Great Dishes of The World. I used to read my parent's copy loads (cool kid, eh?); and love the touches like "Store Cupboard Essentials - a Can Of Turtle Soup." What?

              Rhona,

I am sure I had a copy of Robert Carrier's original Great Dishes of The World, I will have a look and let you know. I might have taken it to a jumble sale, not sure though.

I have that book - and stil refer to it. A mine of information on how to do. And some good recipes too.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

Both Brian and I were booka/cooka holics . Consequently, we had many of the same books when we met. RD Cookery Year was one. We gave the duplicate to friends whose own copy had fallen apart. I still use it regularly and it is a mine of useful information.

They ought to reprint it as it appears to be a (badly kept) cooks secret weapon.
