Value Vinegar

I'm going to be making some large batches of chutneys over the next few days and was looking for a more econmical way to purchase wine vinegar than the small bottles available at the supermarket.

Where can you suggest for the best deals?

I was wondering the same thing yesterday. My husband hates most pickles or gherkins but he was persuaded by the thought of using white wine vinegar in them, so I made some gherkins yesterday with my cooking wine vinegar. Surely, we can just make vinegar from a cheapo bottle of wine and add some salt?

I made some of PW's red onion marmalade last week week and it was completely fab. I added the sultanas and apples and it's fantastic.

Ordered a box of 84 hexagonal jars from eBay today so trying to get mysef organised with ingredients. I've picked all my onions and beetroot and going to make a start on those first. Then onto the jam , marmalade and lemon curd, hopefully the toms will start soon. The plan is to give little hampers filled with homemade produce at Christmas.

have you got a costco or makro nearby then you could buy catering size or try local indian supermarkets they are fab for bulk stuff

I have a Makro card, nearest one is 25 miles away but my other half will pass it tomorrow, I could also ask him to pick up some large packs of sugar. We have some asian supermarkets, including a large Chinese one, excellent suggestions, thanks.

I'd like to make a bunch of jam and pickles. I'm just too cheap to spend .38 p on each jar. My plan had been to buy that low sugar jam from lidl and reuse the jars. Good luck.

I've seen a lot of people offering jam jars on Freecycle recently. It's worth posting a wanted ad on your local site or ask some friends, family and neighbours to save them for you.

Good idea. I have made my first wanted post; maybe I'll meet a neighbour or two in the process.

If you have a Morrisons near you they do it in gallon containers. It's what I use for my chutneys and pickling.
