  • Organic, rare breed pork

I know a chap that keeps rare breed pigs (his son was out joiner when we were renovating). I contacted him the other day to ask if he had any pork now that I am giving sausage making a bash.

I went over last night as the meat had just arrived back from his butcher. He had gammon steaks, shoulder, fillet, chops, belly, sausagemeat, middle, back and streaky bacon, roast, etc all for £2 per pound. I came back with 60lbs, the fridge is stuffed and it will be 'divied' up between a couple of friends and neighbours today.

Is this a bargain? I've never bought direct from a farmer before but it sure beats our village butcher.

We used to buy organic lambs from the Estate where we used to live and it was fantastic value for money and we used to get all the "bits" - liver, heart, kidney too.

That's a real bargain. Now that we buy only organic meat our meat consumption has plummeted as we just can't afford it in the quantities we used to. I've asked my mum to buy me a sausage making machine for my birthday. She's agreed, but I'm certain she's now convinced that I've finally lost my mind. The vine is so good for making a person realize that they're actually quite normal.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

          I 'm after a sausage maker too!

What I really really really want though is a Pastamatic machine. It makes the dough then makes the pasta! Peasy! I love making pasta but happy to find a short cut.

Barg organic meat. We eat meat frequently, but in small quantities - ie. make some mince then use in various dishes etc. with lots of veg. Would love to find a similar deal!

Everyone's been laughing at me and my sausage making - I don't care. My neighbour has an old Kenwood Chef so I bought the sausage stuffer/nozzle attachment from eBay and we've teamed up..

I ordered sausage casing from a website along with rusk and some seasonings and I've downloaded a selection of recipes to try. Now I've got the pork we'll be giving it a proper 'go' tomorrow. Quite excited, lol.

Quite a few people have told me that you can often pick up Kenwood Chefs at Car Boot sales very cheaply. The sausage stuffer attachment was only £5.99 for 2 different sized nozzles. Good cheap way of doing it to see if you're going to like it or not.

We've got a Kenwood & the sausage stuffer too, it's excellent
We haven't used it for a while though - find it a real hassle organising the quantity of meat required without using the freezer since our local butcher closed down. (Because if the meat is frozen, you can't then freeze the sausage you make, so you have to collect it and sausage make the same day, or your fridge is unuseably stuffed!)

Your meat sounds like a bargain
