  • Beetroot

    Hi all,

I have one little beetroot who made it. I have never cooked fresh beetroot, and have only ever had it pickelled.
Could anyone tell me what I should do with it?

    Thanks.

I peal mine then roast it in the oven with Carrots. Yum Yum. Just pour a little olive oil on top and pop in oven till they look cooked

Thanks very much. i have been told they take a long time to boil, but just how long is a long time?
Also I was told to peal it AFTER it has cooked, is that right?

          Thanks again

I would think for baby beets about 15 mins should be enough, but just test by sticking a skewer into it. And yes, when it's boiled you can just rub the skin off with your fingers

Don't forget to wear gloves as they can stain your fingers. Think thats right when they are cooked - and definately so when raw! dexterdog

And that's not all they stain, as you will notice when you go to the loo the day after eating it!

Particularly in children. So if you give the kids fresh beetroot to eat don't panic if their wee looks like blood.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

If you are impatient then you can microwave beetroots which is a lot quicker. Give them a good scrub in cold salt water to kill any lurking nasties, leave 4cm of stalks on and don't cut off any roots, cook like this in the skin otherwise you'll lose all colour and flavour. Pop the beetroots in a microwave dish with 2 tbsp of water, cover and microwave on high for about 10 mins. Adjust the times for the size of the beetroot and you know when it is done when the skin peels back easily when gently scraped with a knife.

When peeled you can eat it, pickle it or whatever!!!!

ps. If you do Delias Pickled Beetroot and Shallots recipe be warned...it is very sharp and sour...I made it then drained the vinegar back out and melted some sugar in it cos it was too sour!!!!!
