  • Seasonal recipes for bunfight

Help please. We are going to a bring and share bun fight in the village hall tomorrow evening.

The idea is to bring a dish using something you have grown yourself.

We've got: beetroot, runners, cabbage, spinach, tomatoes, plums, apples,(the dish just needs to include one or more of your home-grown ingredients)

Something that can be served cold might be best because of limited kitchn resources but it doesn't matter.

    Any brilliant ideas folks?

Keep it smiple, something sweet with apples in, plums too is you like. Ex-neighbour of mine used to bake a massive apple cake. 3 eggs victoria spong mix, a bit runnier than usual (ad a bit of milk) sliced apples laid on base of roasting tin, pour cake mix over. bake 1 hour (I think it was gas 5).
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

Can you do the river cottage chocolate and beetroot cup cakes??? mix the dry ingredients. Liquidise the wet. Mix together, and bake. you could add a plum or apple into the wet mix when liquidising to incorporate the 2 ingredients. Seriously easy and quick - and the moistest and most delicious cakes I have ever made. Need a bit of icing though.

Plum and apple crumble? Easy, gorgeous and especially wonderful if you include roasted hazelnuts in the crumble mix.
        Cheers

I was staying with a friend in Lincs when I posted this one.

We ended up making up a tomato and lentil flan, lavender shortbread biscuits and a chocolate and beetroot cake. Forgot to put sugar in the latter so you can imagine what it was like!

There were some seriously good dishes there including some magical crumbles and fruit fools. Good savoury dishes and soups too.

The organisers are bringing out a cookbook based on the dishes so I hope then to get a butterbean recipe that I enjoyed along with several others. Just think what a book made from recipes on the vine would be like. Actually, we have it right here, don't we and it's a great resource.

Thanks again for the suggestions. The River Cottage cupcakes are next on my 'to try' list.

            Happy cooking!
