  • Pickles........my way

I've just made three jars of pickles......my way!

Sliced green jalapeno's, sliced red jalapeno's, sliced rainbow jalapeno's (half red half green, sliced carrots, small shallots halved, a few dried mixed herbs, a handful of sugar, a teaspoon of sea salt, teaspoon of corriander.

Mixed it all together and let it 'mingle' for a few hours. Filled three coffee jars with the mixture and topped up with clear distilled vinegar (the cheapest!).
Made greaseproof paper lids and stuck elastic bands around.

No boiling of stinking vinegar no addition of water! Last year my pickles were soggy by salting and using boiled vinegar. This year I'm aiming to keep them crisp.

The nicest thing about it is everything came from the allotment apart from the vinegar/salt/sugar of course!

The jars certainly look the part and if they taste crap at least they will ornament the kitchen!

Bet they look gorgeous - really colourful. However, I rather like the smell of stinky boiled vinegar. Himself hates it - doesn't like pickles (!) so I start a pickling or chutney session early on, as soon as he's gone to work. He can still tell when he gets home that I've had me cauldron on!

Sounds good Snadger - what you need is some purple jalapenos, they really are colourful and turn a really impressive shade of red/purple, with a hot fruity taste!
      - these are unconcerned's who gave me the original seeds. I'll have some self-saved seeds soon if you'd like to try some?

        Manda

You shouldn't do things like that, posting those sorts of photos - I'm gonna have to beg you now for some seeds.

Puhleeze, pretty puhleeeezzzzeeee - could I have a couple of those seeds; got loads of peppers/toms/other stuff to trade!!!

My heart actually skipped a beat at that photo. I've even already got the kilner jars to put them in.

*sits back and crosses fingers on both hands, making it difficult to make lunch but what the heck.

Lol! Course you can! If you're okay with taking a chance on them being crossed? I meant to cover the flowerbuds with empty teabags to isolate them, but only did a late one which is still teeny. But I can't see as the early ones would have crossed with owt - so if you'd like some pm me. What interesting toms & peppers do you have?

(Edit - they're unconcerned's photo's, good ain't they? The ones I grew this season, I thought they'd never go that colour, they spent forever a dark purple, but eventually they did change colour and looked fab!)

Thanks SBP! Strangely enough, some of the jallies I've left on the vines are turning a rich purple colour now so will be added to the second batch to add a bit more colour!

Sorry wellie only just seen this, pm if you want a few purple jal seeds.

maximepaul, what kind of chillis are you growing? The purple ones took an age to change colour, and I've another lot still growing in the g/h that seem reluctant to go red/purple.
