  • Candied Peel

Has anyone made any? I want some for the xmas stollen recipe and no-way do I want to buy the shop stuff! Yuk! I've found a few easy-sounding/interesting recipes but wondered if anyone on here had tried to make their own?

Links refusing to work (my computer I think). My only effort was too much work to repeat, Results... useable, but not worth the bother!

I was going to post this! Found a lovely recipe for walnut and candied peel tarts yesterday as alternative to mince pies and fancied doing my own.

I'll try to have a bash this week.

I'm going to try this for sure, and candied fruit segments - Lidls were selling huge punnets of oranges for £1.74 at the weekend

No-one in my family (except me and I don't count!) likes candied peel so I always substitute for it in Christmas recipes. I put in cherries or apricots (or both) and a slack handful of cranberries which I really prefer.

I really love dark choc-dipped orange peel too - might have a go at some for Chrimbo. Anyone tried making them?

I don't like peel either Flum and we swop it out of the xmas pud, but I don't think that's really advisable with stollen? I'm hoping that home-made is nothing like the yukky shop bought stuff?!

Anyway from the bits I read I gleaned this 'basic' info...leave some pith on, it stops your peel shrivelling. The boiling in water is to remove the bitterness from the peel before candying.

Here's a couple more links, some with pictures and all slightly different. We tend to look for the recipe's on more 'reputable' or reliable websites and combine them until we think we have the easiest and tastiest result!

The ones dipped in dark chocolate look very yummy.

Finally got the links (well some of them) to work. Sounds a lot easier than the traditional method I used (many years ago), but may not be as long lasting (traditional method it keeps just about forever in an airtight tin).

Mostly followed this recipe (but boiled it for longer to remove the bitter oils - bout 2 hours+)

just tried a little piece before it cools tastes very sweet but very good, will definately be putting candied peel in the christmas pud & mincemeat next year!

Leaving it too cool for a couple of days - here's a piccy, not looking as glamorous as some I've seen but its mainly pith-side up atm and will be cut up later. Still tastes better than any peel I've tasted before...
