Salad with breaded hake and lemon rice.

Edited to say: love the sound of yours, Bren. Unfortunately, or stupidly, I bought a lot of salad items on a warm day and am now stuck with them. But cod and butterbeans are on the list for early next week. Maybe with a dollop or two of alioli.

I think I'll make a cottage pie for tonight to have with french beans and broccoli.

    Mince pie and cream.

Mr GF has already put in a request for takeaway fish and chips for one evening this week. I'm not arguing.

    Brilliant, thanks Nicos.

I used to order Craster kippers online for delivery to me here in Spain. But not possible nowadays, sadly.

    Yes Snoop…up to 20 kg!

That should keep you in kippers for a while

Kippers! Yes! At one point in my life, I lived in the Isle of Man and sent Manx kippers to my mother regularly.

So sidetracked by the idea of kippers I forgot to say: spag bol, pear for pud.

    Kippers are allowed?!!!

We were just talking about kippers with M up the valley yesterday and he was talking about seeing if he could smuggle some frozen ones in his bag for us on his next visit.

Are you really sure? One of my favourite annual holiday walks was Craster to Dunstanburgh Castle and back again to the tearooms for kippers and brown bread and butter. My dad took a photo of the smokehouse just under sixty years ago: a huge stone-floored warehouse with filthy walls and ceiling and running wet cobbled floor, a bunch of old boys (to me at the time) standing around a huge wheel hanging from the ceiling in one corner with fish dangling from it, the rest of the vast room empty. Doubtless very different now given more modern health and safety concerns.

We had kippers and bread cobs for lunch, then this evening we’re having soup with toasted cheese sandwiches.

I'm thinking scampi, potato scallops or potato waffles, peas and sweetcorn and homemade tartare sauce.

    Rice pudding.
