We have a big joint of beef for our christmas lunch, cooked on a pile of onions, carrots, parsnips etc, the juice from the meat plus roasted veg is very tasty.
Honey roasted leg of lamb with rosemary.
mashed swede with butter and pepper, roasted parsnips ,sweet potatoes and carrots.
side dishes of peas sprouts and broccoli.
To avoid the turkey going dry, I roast it for the first half of the time on its back then turn it over to brown up. The juices all stay in the breast that way.
Other nice things are goose or duck, ham, beef, venison - depends on what you all enjoy eating really.
I would go with goose or pork joint - both should be big enough to feed the family and both have the bonus of having flavoursome, juicy flesh with a nice crisp skin if cooked well.
