was the wholemeal - bread flour Hooray? Although I agree with the others I never managed to get a decent complete wholemeal loaf so we do a mix of white/wholemeal/seeded.

Much to my OHs disgust I bought a new Panasonic the other day, my old one had jumped off the work top some months ago making naan bread dough, it was really battered. BUT his opinion was 'it still works!'. Odd he doesn't think the same when it comes to replacing his laptop or other such item

i don't have a breadmaker sorry, do mine the traditional way by battering it to death myself then cook it in the oven.

I use a mix of 500g strong white (tescos) and 250g hovis seeded, makes a lighter loaf which the boys prefer, but i get me seeds ( btw those measurements make two 1lb loaves)

A crushed vitamin c tablet added to wholemeal helps it rise.

sms6 Yeah it is wholemeal bread flour
Thats the thing that makes me giggle about the breadmaker - the way it threatens to leap off the kitchen counter whenever you leave the room
The dog eyes it up with trepidation

we have a panasonic253 - second one in 6 years, we did have a cheap one before that but it was never "consistent" with results, but have found the more expensive panasonic well worth the extra money! We use it every alternate day
I use the following recipe for sandwiches to take to work:-

                1 sachet bread machine yeast
                500g flour (50/50 mix)
                1 tbsp sugar
                1 1/2 tbsp powdered milk
                1 1/2 tsps salt
                25 g olive oil
                340 g (1g = 1ml) water.

put into machine in given order, set machine for wholemeal quick (3 hours) - take out as soon as finished. We've found if you leave bread in the machine, it's the same as leaving it in a warm oven, so it tends to dehydrate the bread a bit too much.

this gives a firm loaf that for packed lunches doesn't tend to break up.

Hubby likes to experiment and I did adapt a beer bread recipe from the Hairy Bikers website, but I find the above recipe never fails which is what you want if you need bread the following day for packed lunches

I made the wholemeal loaf with good quality wholemeal flour from sainsburys
                  - will try again with mix of wholemeal and white
The loaf is very filling - more so than an off the shelf wholemeal - this is v. encouraging i may eat less in the new year
A friend of mine did some experimenting (he's just the sort), and discovered that ONE cause of 'sunk in the middle' loaf is too much yeast. I can't work out why it should do this, but he tried all sorts of alterations and keeping the yeast down to a very scant teaspoonful prevented recurrences of the problem. He used the 'sachet' yeast, and found that for a small loff, he could get 3 batches from a sachet.I must admit that the idea of putting white flour in a 'wholemeal' loaf is something I find quite off putting. I either want wholemeal, or white, NEVER a mix of the 2. Takes all sorts to make a world.

I don't believe it!!!! Just set the machine to make Pizza Dough and it's done exactly the same thing again.

This time a huge chunk of plastic has broken off. Don't know whether it will still work or not.

Can't imagine what OH is going tosay when he comes in
