  • making eggs

I wold love to have a go at making easter eggs this year as can't abide the horrid tasteless plastic treble wrapped ones in the shops. Lat year I asked family to only buy foil wrapped or the like and NO plastic but we still ended up with loads of plastic casings

I bought just foil wrapped (bunnies etc) for my family, or wooden toys with eggs in instead.

Has anyone ever made them? Is it easy? Is it cost effective? I would have to buy everything, moulds, wrapping etc.

    Any thoughts?

You're gonna hate me for saying it but here goes anyway!!Did you save any of the plastic casings from last year?I used one a couple of years ago as a mould & it worked fine.....just melt the chocolate, coat the plastic, leave to dry/harden.Pop out & join the 2 halves with more melted chocolate.
Last year I made some "chocolate dough" & let the kiddies make their friends little creatures out of it.
recipe is simple....3oz choc, melted.allow to cool slightly & add 1&1/2 tablespoons of golden syrup.Wrap in clingfilm & put in fridge for an hour, then mould to the shapes you want. You can use plain, milk & white chocolate for different colours/shades.
the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.

Happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have.xx

I've made them the size of a normal ( well- not tiny ones like Betty's) eggs

I bought some moulds and melted Cadburies chocolate in the microwave-then filled the casings. Stuck the 2 halves together with a smear of chocolate.
One solid little egg that size is really quite good fun to get through, esp if stored in the fridge!

If you melt it carefully in the microwave, it goes through a few stages
      a) just nicely melted
      b) ..this is the interesting bit cos with only a few more seconds it'll start to set a bit like a heavy Aero...and that's lovely!!
      c) burnt and crispy- bin job!

You've really got to keep an eye on it and keep stirring it.Won't go bubbly in a bowl over hot water.

Nice to use plain choc too. You can add mint or orange- or even coffee flavourings to the choc for variety.

Mine always seemed to have my fingerprints on them though- but I suppose it's better than fluff/cat hair- or even the odd lick mark!!!

My hands are always FREEZING cold so that may well solve the fingerprint issue
