  • Turnip suggestions please

    Last year I bought some turnip seeds. I have never cooked them and thought I should try them before I committed myself to a whole row!
    I picked up a 2kg bag yesterday - what do I do with them now........

    Just treat them as any root vegetables. Boil, steam or roast them either in their own or together with other root vegetables. Please do remember that turnips have a bitter taste which some people don't like or aren't used to it. Personally I love them.

      add them to stews and cassoroles as you would swede and parsnips, very nice

        They're nice roasted in one inch cubes with a load of other root veg & pumpkin (sprinkled with Cayenne or Paprika, yum)

        Young tender ones you can eat grated on a salad or in a coleslaw (like carrot)

        There isn't much flavour in them, but they are a useful winter "filler" ~ cubed and added to stews/soups to bulk it out

              I fry mine in butter til they caremalise - husband hated them til he tasted the one i grew this year (first time) chickens grubbed up most of them.....

                I've got a good crop of turnips this year: the first time I've really been successful with them. Tonight I'm making Cheesey Mashed Neeps. A recipe's not really needed, but here it is:


                2 large white turnips, peeled and cubed
                4 oz cheese, grated
                1 tbsp butter
                season to taste (salt, pepper, paprika etc)

                Boil turnips for about 12 mins. Drain & mash with butter, seasonings and cheese.

                  Hmm, sure I read somewhere that turnip goes tough if you boil in salted water (don't remember where though)

                      I steamed mine with some carrots last night. I don't think they have a bitter taste at all, not much of a taste actually but a lovely crunchy texture if lightly steamed. Don't add salt or butter but do grind a bit of black pepper on top when they're done.

                      Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

                        I have a lovely recipe for a spicy turnip and tomato stew ("Turnips with Garlic Tomato", apparently). It is from Leith's Vegetable Bible:

                        450g/1lb of small white turnips
                        2 tbsp olive oil
                        4 shallots, finely chopped (we just use onions)
                        3 cloves of garlic, chopped
                        1 red chilli, deseeded and chopped (we tend to use dried crushed chilli flakes, just a pinch mind!)
                        1 200g can of chopped tomatoes (though think we may use a bigger can? not sure)
                        150ml vegetable stock
                        salt and pepper
                        2 tbsp chopped flat leaf parsley

                        1. Peel and trim the turnips. Cut each turnip in to 6-8 thick wedges, depending on size (in reality we get any old turnips and chop in to cubes that are around 3/4 inch in size). Heat oil in frying pan, add shallots and cook over a low heat until softened. Add turnips, garlic and chilli, cover and cook gently for about 10 minutes.
                        2. Stir in tomatoes and stock. Season. Simmer gently for about 20 mins until turnips tender and sauce reduced. Sprinkle with parsley before serving.

                        Its really lovely with some cous cous made with stock instead of water. Yum yum. A new discovery for me and one of my fave new meals.
