  • Baby Birthday Cake

It's our baby girl's first Birthday on Wednesday (it goes sooo quickly doesn't it?) and I'd like to bake her a Birthday cake, even though she obviously won't remember a thing about it.

Thing is, I don't like her having sugary things yet apart from fruit, and won't for another few months. If I make muffins, they're sweetened with pineapple and ripe banana, and dried apricots, for example.

Is is possible to make a 'proper' cake without sugar or honey in it? I'm not much of a baker but would like to do something! My original idea of a fairytale castle cake was a. too ambitious, and b. I forgot to order the cake tin.

    Any ideas?

I made a sugar-free cake by replacing the sugar in a Victoria Sandwich recipe with mashed banana. You need about 1½ times the weight of banana to the sugar you have left out. It really can be that simple but add a little extra baking powder (about 1 level teaspoonful in a 2 or 3 egg mix).

Thanks sooo much! Just done cake and it's fine - did the banana trick. I'd post a picture but some of you are REALLY good at making/decorating cakes, and I'm...erm...not... but it tastes fine!

            Fantastic cake!
My best ever was a 'mini car', when son was 6. Baked in 2 rectangular enamel pie dishes, different sizes, stuck together and covered with butter-icing, sweeties for wheels (licorice all sorts the right shape) headlights (mint imperials) and indicator lights (midget gums). I can't remember how I did the windscreen and windows (it was over 20 years ago), but it may have simply been 'piped' and smoothed over.

I use it in coffee, but the point of a 'no sugar' cake for a child is to avoid getting them to expect too much sweetness. In a lot of ways artificial sweeteners are even worse.......

You'll get there HW panic not!

Rhona I think it's lovely to have gone to so much trouble, and take lots of pics of the day and the cake, she may not remember but you can show her.

I made my son's first cake, never made one before in my life now I am slowly getting better (he's 4 - although he does have some wacky ideas for his 5th one and I am a bit scared about making those).

A friend of ours did not let their twins have anything sweet. For their first b-day she bought big cakes (a pig and a cow I think) and wouldn't let them have any! Now that's mean. I can remember their little faces, crying, as she took the cake away after taking a pic of them with them then gave it all to the grown-ups. Mind you, when she wasn't looking granny sneaked them some icing... naughty.

Well done Rhona...sounds tasty & I'm sure you're being modest about the outcome....just do as I do & select poor lighting to take the pics!!
